A Retrofit Method to Mitigate Progressive Collapse in Steel Structures

Accidental events, such as impact loading or explosions, are rare events characterized by a very low probability of occurrence. However, their effects often lead to high human losses and economic consequences likely trigger the progressive collapse buildings. The structures attracted attention many researchers topic has been widely investigated in recent years. In addition, increasing interest shown also on definition retrofit strategies able increase robustness existing structures. present work investigates performance design solution steel moment resisting frames. A case study structure is selected modelled OpenSees, including both mechanical geometrical non-linearities. Non-linear static analyses have carried out frame, simulating column loss scenario investigate subsequent load redistribution. simulations showed that was unable redistribute hence retrofitting required. Among others, truss system added at rooftop level building allowing an alternative path. outcomes how proposed method allows allowed for critical remarks checks required when this employed.
